The Place
L’Abri is located in a countryhome, few minutes by car from the village. The house has four suites in the first floor and one in the second. We receive three to four persons per room. For weekends, we can receive up to 17 people, and for terms up to 10.
We have a multi-media room, for lectures and movies, a portuguese/english library, a living room and two kitchens. In the property we have also a swimming pool, a volley court, the garden and a nice view of the forest.
Study
There is no formal curriculum, except by some introductory audio lectures we recommend to every new student. After that, each student can arrange with his tutor an individualized program of reading and hearing lectures. Each week we offer two or three new lectures in the media room.
As L’Abri is quite informal, it is easy to distract yourself from the studies. It is really important that you concentrate and respect the timetable. When hearing lectures or reading texts, take notes and try do discuss the subjects at the lunch time, tea time or with your tutor. Try to understand your and the others questions.
Routine (for Terms)
One of the important things in L’Abri is rithm. Day starts with the breakfast at 8hs, followed by the prayer time. After that, the morning is divided in two periods, separated by the morning tea.
At 13:00 hs. we have the “lunch discussion”, when we seat together and every student has the opportunity to present is own questions for debate.
After a free time (up to 15hs p.m.) we have two more times separated by the afternoon tea. One of them, at least, is work time (both eventually). You will be invited to help with the garden, with cleaning up, with the kitchen or organizing something.
After supper, we have programs four nights per week (lectures/movie discussions/high tea), and the remaining free.
In order to take the highest benefit in L’Abri, it is essential that you get involved with all the activities that compound the local community life, including helping with the work.
Recommendations
The area has mobile signal, but you can use the L’Abri telephone, paying a tax.
As the study is very centered on recorded lectures, it is important that you bring with you your MP3 device, and headphones.
L’Abri contryhouse lays between two mountains, so that we have no sun after 16h15. Thereby the place is quite fresh on summer, but quite cold in the winter, especially at night. We recommend that you do not forget your warm clothes!
If you can play some musical instrument, recit or compouse poems, or have some artistic skills, it’ll be a pleasure for all to share that in L’Abri high tea!

O Lugar
L’Abri funciona em um sítio a três minutos de carro do centro da vila de Macacos. A casa tem quatro suítes e um quarto no primeiro andar, e um suíte no segundo (onde fica a família Carvalho). Recebemos de três a quatro pessoas em cada suíte. A lotação máxima para termos é de 10 pessoas, e para finais de semana, de 17 pessoas.
Temos uma sala de mídia, para palestras e filmes, uma biblioteca, uma sala de estar e uma ampla cozinha, onde são servidas as refeições. Em torno da casa temos piscina, quadra de vôlei e jardim. Há bastante espaço para estudo e reflexão: na sala, na varanda, no jardim ou à beira da piscina, lugar com vista bonita não falta!
Estudo
Não há um currículo formal para os estudos, exceto por um conjunto básico de palestras introdutórias, em áudio, que recomendamos a todos os novos estudantes. A partir daí, cada estudante combina com o seu tutor (um dos obreiros) um programa individualizado de leitura e audição de palestras gravadas. Duas ou três vezes na semana apresentamos novas palestras na sala de mídia.
Como o ambiente em L’Abri é muito informal (até “caseiro”), é fácil distrair-se dos estudos. É importante que você se concentre e procure respeitar os horários. Ao ouvir palestras ou ler textos, tome notas para discutir o assuntos com outros na hora do almoço, do chá ou com o seu tutor.

Após um período livre (até às 15hs), seguem-se mais dois períodos separados pelo chá da tarde. Pelo menos um deles é de trabalho (eventualmente, os dois). Você será escalado para ajudar no jardim, na limpeza, na cozinha ou na organização de alguma coisa.
Depois do jantar, temos programações em quatro noites por semana (palestra/discussão de filme/sarau), e os outros três dias são livres.
Para ter o máximo proveito em L’Abri, é essencial que você se envolva com todas as atividades que compõe a vida comunitária local, inclusive auxiliando nas tarefas.
